Easter 2000

I looked at my site, and realized, that I had nothing about Easter here. Many Christmaseses or Wappus, but no Easter. Now there's something.

Palm Sunday

April 16th. 2000. This is the beginning of Easter. For our other big religious group orthodox (biggest is Lutherans), this is biggest possible occasion. But for non-religious people, this isn't very big thing.

The kids are holding "virpa". That looks like genuine local tradition. But it isn't. Definitely not.

The market-junkies realized, that we don't have any Halloween or such. They want to make it. And they succeeded! Some traditions from our Carelian part (they have a lot of traditions). Something from Sweden. Add a lot of commercialism. And there You are! Cash-registers keep their lovely sound...

I don't even open my door that day!

We have just no special traditions for Palm Sunday. We did just "normal Sunday" things. My sister Anna (and family, of course) and me went to Uusmäki.

Though kids of my cousin (Heikki Hyötyniemi) and his wife (Sanna) were there.

Usually I really hate being out. Much too warm. But not so this early in spring.

Crocuses (Crocus)were the first flowers there.

In nature, our nearly first flowers are hepaticas (Hepatica triloba). That flower isn't actually very common. And it isn't very rare, either.

Maundy Thursday

This time it was really warm day! Sweaty. But look my weather-page!

Good Friday

We were in Uusmäki, my parents place. Quite big amount of people there: my cousin Heikki Hyötyniemi (and his sons Elias and Matias); mother of Heikki, Maija Hyötyniemi; My sister Anna (and, of course, her kids (Pauli and Tuuli) and husband (Mika, if You want to know)); My parents (naturally); and then of course me.

Heikki had some really nasty news. His wife, Sanna, has died of cancer. Husband was Heikki and kids (extremely small ones) Elias and Maties.

We had so much warmth. So, everyone went out. I'm in shades, because I can't tolerate much heat.

This is apple-tree. Though it hasn't produced much during last years. But who cares.

As You can clearly see: no leaves. But in about a month it'll have flowers.

Flower bed. So barren and dead. I must put a link here, which shows it is summer. Really very different then.

What's this flower? I don't really know (actually I don't care). Maybe it's - ouch my big dictionary doesn't have the word!

Maija Hyötyniemi was organizing thins for Heikki. Excellent thing!

Holy Saturday

Old belief tells this as time of witches. And people of Ostrobothnia burn burn bonfires to scare them. But this year people are quite scared too: big floods.

But I don't care. Formula one qualifying race from Silverstone, England. That's the main thing for that day.

Easter Sunday

Those Formula One -races were today And Mika Häkkinen didn't won. But he won Michael Schumacher. And that's important!

Easter Monday

Relatives were here:

This is 'pasha'. Traditional Easter-delicacy of our orthodox minority. But actually 'pasha' is extremely greasy. This isn't!

First we had soup made of asparagus.

Then (very traditionally) lamb (we eat lamb only one day of year: this day). With really excellent sauce. And garlic potatoes - heavenly!

Pokemons! This young mind is tainted!!

Tuuli wasn't very pleased: four boys and only one girl. But then this yummy thing made world feel much better.
