Autumn

From September to end of November. October and especially November are the worst times here. My webcam looks out all the time.

September 5th, 2000. This is my "up" neighbor, coming back after smoking a cigarette. He is not allowed to smoke at his home...

Temperatures: Max 14.3C (=57.7F); Min 6.2C (=43.1F). And housekeeper (by our social security system) saw yesterday rain mixed with snow. That's really unusual at this time. But it was caused by a cold front.

September 8th, 1999. Autumn was really odd this year. Really, it was too warm. Like my trip to Tallinn earlier this week. Okay, the sea was very rough. But weather, that was just great. Highest temperature was 24.8C (=76.6F) and lowest 11.1C (=51.9F). Quite dramatical changes. Typically that high temperature is much lower.

September 13th, 2000. Now we have even some colors of Autumn! Okay, not very much, but some. I think, that's a maple. That tree is just for autumn! Nice, anyway?

Then some weather-info. Temperatures. Max: 16.3C (=61.3F); Min 5.0C (=41.0F).

September 17th, 2000. I visit in Sundays (if there isn't F1-race) Uusmäki.

Then temperatures: Max 14.1C (57.3F); min 0.6C (33.0F).

September 22nd, 1999. Warm, unusually warm. Okay, all summer has been exceptionally warm.

Farmers act quite funnily now. They make applications. For drought. Not funny? But last year, they made applications for too much water!!

Highest temperature was 16.9C (=62.4F). And lowest was 7.4C (=45.3F). Quite wide margins? That can be explained with clouds. Or, actually, lack of them!

But we had clouds in the next day. And rain...

September 24th, 2000. I was in Uusmäki. Then I added things to my webcam.

Temperatures.max 15.2C (59.3F); min 1.4C (34.5F). It was autumn equinox yesterday. It's the day, when day and night are equally long. And that is so in whole earth!

September 26th, 1998. Autumn is coming! The difference with previous picture is quite dramatical. Autumnal equinox was just a few days ago. Highest temperature was 10.9C and lowest 4.2C.

September 28th, 2000. This autumn has been really warm this far. So, the rain starts any day now (sounds really pessimistic? I call it realism)! But hopefully not very soon!

Then temperatures: Max 13.6C (56.4F); Min 4.4C (39.9F). The weather-gurus said, that this is untypically warm in this time.

October 1st, 2000. Now the Olympic games in Sydney have ended. Finland got four medals and five "points place" (which gave the rank of 31th). The goal was five medals and twelve "points place". Especially the beginning of games was really poor.

Aussies are really trustworthy. I was quite certain that the ultimate un-chick was reached in Atlanta games. But no, it was here!

Astri Delafield was here next day,

Then meteorological info. Max 16.6C (61.8F); Min 5.4C (41.7F).

October the 2nd, 1999. Yesterday was rainy day. But usually autumn is very rainy here. But not this year, no! This has been really unusually dry!

Some leaves have gone. That happened yesterday, too. Rather hard wind, You see,

Highest temperature was 18.1C (=64.5F) and lowest 12.6C (=54.6F).

October 6th, 2000. Ökö (and Helmi, too) likes to watch out from the window. Okay, the number of birds declines quite rapidly. And this tree doesn't actually do thing very wisely: the ltaves are gren when they are dropped. Thus valuable chlorophyllin is lost!!

Ökö would love to get out. There's quite cold now. One has to be pretty efficient hunter, if one wants to survive.

Warmest temperature was 15.9C (60.6F); coldest 8,1C (46.5F).

October the 9th, 1999. Nearly all leaves are gone. We had typical autumn-weather during night: rain and heavy amount of clouds. But there has been less and less clouds!

Highest temperature was 10.6C (=51.0F) and lowest 1.6C (=34.8F).

October 13eh.2000. Quite much happened this day (normally, the day is full of nothing...):

Those bushes were cut really quite rafically. See!

Temperatures out: max 13.2C (55.7F) min 10.3C (50.5F); inside max 23.6C (74.4F) min 22.7C (72.8F). As You can clearly see, this time of year is really depressing time here: extremely dark, some small rain continuously, and rather overall nasty weather...

October the 17th, 1998. Autumn is quite full now. Or nearly gone! There are only a few leaves in trees left. Highest temperature was 7.0C, and lowest 4.9C. Not much difference, eh? This is due to the thick clouds. And we had rain in the evening. But then we had party by Taru Maamies!

Day after this (and night after it) we had really big storm. For instance that Nordic Jet Line had to turn back. I made my Tallinn-trip with it (but that was in the summer, of course).

October 18th, 2000. Both cats look out of same window. Actually, that's quite miracle: Ökö usually chases Helmi away quite immediately. But the amount of leaves are radically reduced. So birds are easily spotted.

I had a physical therapy later in that day.

Then temperatures. Max 10.1C (50.1F); Min 8.1C (46.5F). I looked temperatures at 11AM and max was 8.9C and min 8.2C. Very narrow amount of temperature changes!

October 23th, 2000. Communal elections were yesterday. The voting activity was really low, only 56%. Okay, that can be explained by really extremely bad weather (and F1-race in Malaysia). My reprensative got 139 votes. So, she wasn't elected. My vote went to the party, so it's not wasted.

That actual day was "good": the weather was really quite excellent. But forecasts have said, that there will be rain. And day after that and... As I have said so many times, we had really excellent rowanberry-year. Birds like that!

Then weather: max temperature 10.2C (50,3F); min temperature 5.4C (41.7F).

October, the 26th, 1999. Party by Taru Maamies was just yesterday. And today Ökö was taket to vet.

Quite wet weather. And dark, too. This is the worst time of Year; very depressive.

Highest temperature was 8.9C (=48.0F), and lowest 5.7C (=42.2F).

October 28th-29th, 2000. I had party by Merja this weekend.

Look, how this place looked like just a few weeks ago.

Then to weather! I must admit, it's really extremely lousy . But anyway. I think this was the first time we went below freezing-point. That's really quite inmportant time: we had some rain (that melted immediately to water, when it touched ground) of snow mixed with water. Then temperatures: max 3.4C (38.1F); min -2.0C (28.4F).

Everyone asked why we didn't have a big party after great championship (so, this picture was taken on November 2nd, 1998) by Mika Häkkinen. This picture explains the situation. It has been taken near midday, because otherwise it would be much too dark. This time of Year is very depressing: extremely dark, quite constant nasty rain, and then cold.

Highest temperature in that day was 4.0C and lowest 1.5C. Not much change in them. But that is explained by thick clouds.

November 5th, 2000. I was in stamp-expo yesterday.

Then temperatures. Maximum was 10.1C (50.1F) and minimum 8.9C (48.0F). This is really untypically warm: now the problem is, that migrating birds doesn't do so. And when real winter then eventually comes... But isn't this actually basic darwinism? Here stupid birds die.

You see the ground? It's wet. Because it rained. It was starting yesterday. Who knows, when it ends.

November 9th, 2000. Today I visited Metsähovi research center.

Then weather: highest temperature 9.4C (48.9F); lowest 4.5C (40.1F).

And the snow came in next day after that announcement! Okay, this picture is from Friday (that is November 6th, 1998). Usually that first snow melts in few hours. But not this. Some kind of meteorological things... We had about 10cm (about four inches) of it. But just no problems! That's just very normal thing here, no reason to do any special things (like closing highways or schools). No need!

Now is Wednesday November 11th. And everything is still here! Very unusual thing. Highest temperature has been -2.4C and lowest -10.0C. Cold (okay, in March I'll call it warm). And that snow is still on the branches of trees. Usually that is blown away in first wind. But when the snow melts a little and then freezes. Then it sits there!

That thing is called in our language "tykkylumi". And that happen nearly every winter in the northern parts of our country. But very seldomly here. That's quite deadly thing to trees: it prevents breathing, and it's heavy. But who cares - it's so romantic!

November 12th, 1999. This is the most depressing time of the whole year! Days are extremely short now. And the sun doesn't rise very high. Ökö looks through window. But what? Nearly all birds have flown to south.

Highest temperature was 10.7C (21.2=F) and lowest 7.0C (=44.6F). Exceptionally warm. But weather-man (no, sorry, weather person) said, that it would be under freezing-point in very near future.

And yes, on Sunday something (not very much) rained down. And more on Tuesday.

Sunday November 12th, 2000. It was fathers' day. And I (actually, my father) took a picture of dead garden in Uusmäki.

The weather seems to be rather warm now. Because these other entries clearly say, that quite much of the rain comes as snow. But this year. Rain, much of it. But it comes as form of water. Then temperatures: max 8.8C (47.8F); min 6.4C (43.5F).

Sunday, November 19th, 2000. This time of year is really depressing! I was in Uusmäki with my parents. That happens nearly every Sunday (okay, not when there is Formula-races in Europe).

Then temperatures: maximum 6.9C (44.4F); minimum 2.7C (36.8F).

Sunday November 21st, 1999. Quite dark day. But luckily we have a little snow. This would be really gloomy and depressing without snow.

Highest temperature was -1.5C (=29.3F). And lowest -5.4C (=22.2F). Those are below water freezing-point. And ground is colder that that. So, the snow stays. Until next warm period.

Wednesday November 22nd,2000. I started Christmas shopping. This early, because, I really hate big totally raged crowd.

Temperatures. I reseted much too lately the temperature meter. So, the minimum tremperature was lost. But here are. Maximum 4.2C (39.7F); minimum 0.8C (33.4F).

Tuesday, November 28th, 2000. I wanted to go to town today. But no: I got very bad flu!

Ökö had now quite clear idea, that it isn't so good idea to go out: there's cold (that isn't so big problem) and wet (that's big problem).

There are boring people. And stupid dogs. And (because the Christmas is coming) elves. Then some birds - there's something interest. But the most interesting thing are squirrels in that pine.

Temperatures: Max 4.7C (40.4F): min -0.4C (31.2F).
